In 2016 325 passengers and/or crew lost their lives in an aviation accident, aviation-safety.net (ASN) counted 19 crashes involving civil aircraft. In 2015 ASN already counted a record low total of 16 fatal airliner accidents, resulting in 560 fatalities.

- 7 December: Pakistan International Airlines crashes near Abottabad (47)
- 25 December: Russian military Tu-154 disappears in the Black Sea (92)
